QVS and RKS make the most of American Coaches

It is now to the end of the first week of the US Embassy in Partnership with Basketball Fiji Outreach Program and the team now reached the likes of Queen Victoria School, Ratu Kadavulevu School, Adi Cakobau School, Latter Day Saints Church College and Nasinu Secondary School, after visiting the interested schools from Nadi, Lautoka and Ba.

The team which consists of two US College coaches, two former professional basketball players and Basketball Fiji development Officers covered the students of RKS and QVS on Thursday for an hour each. The heat and good weather followed them but despite the burning hot sun they were pleased with the students and the determination that were on show.

“The children in Fiji show great promise and could contribute immensely to the game of basketball here in this beautiful country,” says Anna Tuiaea-Rudd who was an assistant women’s coach of Washington University in the US. She concludes with an emphasis on the support of parents, friends and family for those that do take up the sport. “They can’t do it alone.”

On Saturday the US visitors will be conducting a Coaches, Trainers and Managers Clinic at the Vodafone Arena from 10am-12pm for coaches and managers who are preparing for the National Easter Basketball Club Championship. The students are all taught the basic fundamentals of basketball with the addition of organized games.

Basketball Fiji Development Officer, Laisiasa Puamau said that “Basketball Fiji’s target, is to increase the number of students included into the National Development Program where the National Youth teams will be selected, enlarge the number of High School participating in the National Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament and to promote the sport of basketball in our schools system,” The team has yet to visit Yat Sen Secondary School, Marist Brothers High School, Laucala Bay Secondary School, John Wesley, Saints Joseph Secondary School, Suva Grammar School, Gospel High School and International Secondary School.

This is, so far, the largest Basketball Outreacch Program that has ever been done in Fiji and is made available through the help and guidance of the US Embassy and Ms Anna Tuiaea-Rudd and her team.
