EASTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2008

The annual Easter Club Championship was held over the Easter weekend in Suva.  Nine men's teams - Cougers, Bankstown, Vikings from Lautoka, Nadi Juniors from Nadi and Knights - 2 teams, Lami Hands, Freshmen and Shaq Attack from Suva competed in two pools.  In the semi-finals Vikings met up with Nadi Juniors and Freshmen played Shaq Attack.  Vikings and Freshmen went onto play in the final and the Lautoka Vikings Club has the bragging rights for 2008 by winning the tournament but only just as the final score was 3 points difference (34-31).

The Nadi Juniors were most impressive and while comprising all young players (under 21 years) played the style of basketball that National Men's Head Coach Paul Whippy is trying to instil into the national team.

In the women's division there were only 3 teams as one (Mystics) withdrew at the last moment.  Saints and Knights were joined by a selection from the National Youth Women's Squad (NDP).  This was the first time for these young players (many 14 and 15) to play against women and they acquitted themselves very well, playing intense and aggressive defence throughout.

In the women's final the fitness and expereince of the Saints team with current National Women's Squad members in Seini Dobui, Mareta Mani, Alisi Tabualevu, Matila Waqanidrola, along with several National Youth Women's Squad members, saw them get home by the same margin of 3 points (31-28).

Exciting finals indeed to this year's Easter Championship.
