Basketball knockout a success

Over 150 people were at the National Gymnasium to either participate or support the opening the Suva/Laucala Basketball knockout competition for 2009.

The season commenced with a two- week knockout competition and would be concluded next week before the regular basketball league commenced the following week.

A spokesperson for Suva who does not want his name to be revealed said the turnout was a success and again they are looking forward to the second round of the knockout tournament next week.

He said it was good players showed to start the league within the next two weeks and played extremely well for their respective teams on Thursday night.

“It was good to see such an overwhelming turn out to the start of the 2009 basketball season. We have invested a lot of time and effort to ensure the competition for 2009 is lifted to new levels, both in game play and management.”

He called interested basketball players to support the league competition and be part of the development of the sport in the country.

“We encourage all basketball players to support the competition and the overall development of the sport in Fiji,” he said.

Few team officials said the players in general were eager to get in to the full swing of the competition. Barbarians dominated the competition being unbeaten while the game between Rawai and Freshman livened up the tournament with Freshman victorious with 4 points.

The Suva/Laucala knockout tournament continues next Friday before the league starts the following week.
