Reps back on court

THE country's top basketball teams will hit the courts this Thursday to battle for top honours in the opening tournament of 2010 -- the National Basketball Club Championship. The tournament, called off in December due to slippery conditions at Lautoka's Multi-Purpose Courts, will be held in Suva. Tournament official Saula Koroi said preparations had been done and everyone was looking forward to the tournament. Koroi said all teams had been doing their training. "I believe the delay will a blessing for some teams as they were given some extra time for training and work on areas they to fix before they run out into the courts this week," Koroi said. Koroi said all teams from the Raiwaqa Basketball Competition have been working hard in the past few weeks working on their game plan. "I believe the tournament will be tough as all the top teams are coming to participate," Koroi said. Defending champions Shaq from Suva is the top bet to retain their status. Last year's runner-up, Vikings from Lautoka will be coming in for revenge. Vikings are expected to be led by national reps Simi Cagilaba and Jale Vunisa. Top clubs from Raiwaqa Bryceland, Boston and Idaman will also be a threat to Shaq in the three-day tournament. Sixteen men's teams and eight women's teams will take part in the tournament and matches will be played at Eds Courts in Raiwaqa and at the LDS Church Courts in Raiwasa.
