MASI Finau was the star player as Baseliners upset Idaman 38-37 in the quarter-finals of the Suva Laucala Basketball Assoc-iation club competition on Tuesday night.

The last quarter-final went to the wire with Baseliners matching favourites Idaman in every facet of play.

"Masi got a lot of rebounds for Baseliners," said Suva Laucala Basketball Association president and national team captain Leonard Whippy.

"The winner was decided in overtime. The points were evenly scored in what was the season's closest game.

"Everyone was taking shots and it was neck-and-neck and basket-for-basket from the start."

"Earlier in round-robin play, Idaman beat Baseliners pretty convincingly."

Idaman missed the services of its top player and national rep Koli Matalau.

In the semi-finals this weekend, Shaq Attaq will play Baseliners while top seed Saints take on Air Iguana.

In other quarter-finals at the Vodafone Arena, Shaq Attaq beat Pitbulls 65-28 and Air Iguana sent Knights packing 31-11.

Whippy said since the new association had only seven clubs, it was decided that as points table leaders, Saints would qualify automatically for the semis.

"The remaining six teams played to determine the semi-finalists."

He said Suva Laucala Basketball Association would be represented by five clubs in the annual Easter Championship next month.

"The four semi-finalists will be taking part. The three losing teams Pitbulls, Knights and Idaman will play-off with the winners to qualify as the fifth team," Whippy said.
