Wed C wins crown

WEDNESDAY Crew were happy after they hammered Goldern Bati 31-22 at the Easter Basketball Championship women's final yesterday at the Vodafone Arena. The Wed C had the likes of former national reps in captain Seini Dobui, Dale Wise, Agnes Sokosoko, Hannah Tuikoro and national netball rep Matila waqanidrola. They have a tendency to change their team names every year but this is the fourth year that captain, Dobui led a side to the Easter finals. Wed C had the help of the University of the South Pacific's exchange student, Emily Hough, from Vermont who practically ran circles round the Bati. Bati, led by the All-Stars Brittany Hazelman, were no match for the older team. With the last two minutes of game in synch both teams began to desperately grab for baskets by throwing long passes but the fast pace of the game was too much to get a good and proper shot. However, in the last two minutes, Dobui shot a basket, bringing the points up to 31-20 and then with a minute to go, Hazelman took off and with smart and accurate steppings shot past the Wed C defenders to shoot, bringing the scores up to 31-22. Golden Bati had beaten Chosen, 39-30 in the semis while Wed C thrashed the Lautoka Vikings 38-12. "The Vikings were really tough but we got through their defences and that was all that really counted," said Dobui. In the Golden Bati and Chosen match, Sera Colata was on her toes and won 12 points for her side. And former national rep Wise was top scorer in their game against Vikings winning her side -- 10 points. They were called Saints at first and then they switched to Executioners last year and are now known as the Wed Crew.
