Basketball in the city

Young basketball players will converge in Suva later this month for the Twisties sponsored National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships. Fiji Basketball development officer Lai Puamau says the Suva secondary schools basketball competition is the perfect platform for the players to gain experience before the nationals on August 23-25. “The Suva secondary schools basketball competition goals are to give the students the much needed game time prior to the National Secondary Schools Championships,” Puamau said. “The teams and players are catching up on the basic fundamentals and skills of the game very quickly, especially the new schools that have joined the competition.” The Suva secondary schools competition is centered on active fun and competitive participation. “This has been achieved with the inclusion of 10 schools comprising of 39 teams participating in the U-15, U-17 and U-19 boys and girls competition. “The schools are currently participating to gain much needed knowledge of the game. “Moreover, they will be playing off for ranking prior to the National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships in August. The teams in each grade would be divided into two pools according to their rankings. “In short the number one team from Suva will take Pool A and the number one seed team from Lautoka will take the second pool and then teams will be sorted out accordingly.”
