Tall timber makes debut

VANUABALAVU native Leba Korovou is keen to get her first taste of top level competition during the women's Under-20 Oceania Basketball Championship next month in New Caledonia.

Residing in Lautoka, the Lomaloma villager said it would be a debut for her in the national colours.
"All along I've dreamt of representing Fiji," she said.

The Lauan lass said her aim was to assist the team to win gold.

"We'll work hard to achieve that goal."

With tournament giants Australia and New Zealand participating, she said it would be a good exposure for her.

"This will certainly provide me the needed exposure at the international level."

Being the youngest in the squad, the 14-year old secondary school student will be a tower of strenght in the side with her strong built and also being tallest among the 12-member squad.

Also making their debut at the meet will be fellow west teammates Maria Dabea, Sisilia Sislia Builolo and Briana Kam Soo.

Coach Seini Dobui confirmed a few of the playwers haven't tasted top level basketball.

"But I have seen a great improvement in their performance leading to their preparations from last year.

"It's the development work that is taking place that enabled them to strive harder to achieving their goal," she said during their training at the Vodafone Arena last evening.

She added development in basketball should have started for youngsters at the age of six like other sports such as swimming.

"But they have improved and their preparation is excellent."

She said the girls were excited and looking forward to the games.

Also they are focus in their preparation since they are also preparing for the South Pacific Games next year since the men's and women's are defending champions.
