Newcomers cause basketball upsets

TWO teams from the Raiwaqa junior development program have been included in the Twisties National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship for the first time.

The two teams are made of under-14 boys and girls of Raiwaqa and Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said tournaments like these assist their development program. "These are kids of Raiwaqa who stay close to Ed's Court and they live, breath and eat basketball," said Puamau. "Their inclusion in this tournament will be a big boost to their development program," he said.

The team proved to be a threat as the boys side, Raiwaqa Juniors, beat defending champions Edupia 20-11 yesterday while they thumped Natabua High School 43-2 on Monday. "The defeat has eliminated Edupia from the tournament and Raiwaqa Juniors looks to be the surprise contenders for the title."

Puamau said the high level of performance of the Raiwaqa Juniors was testimony of the hard work and efforts of the Raiwaqa Basketball Association.

"They have shown a lot of maturity in their level of skills which left the crowd amazed."

The girl's side has also sent a warning to schools after a commanding 37-10 win over Laucala Bay Secondary School.
