Basketball Fiji used the National Championships as the first round for identifying squad members for the National Youth teams to represent Fiji at the Oceania Youth Tournament in October. Selectors observed players during the round games and in trials. It was evident that there was a huge amount of talented players who wanted to show their best to the selectors. At the end of the round games, those eligible players not going through to the quarter finals were invited onto court. Selectors were surprised when over 30 boys came forward. Selectors were able to determine which boys they would like to come to future squad training which should get underway in the next few weeks. Unfortunately the numbers were not repeated in the girls trials, but selectors have been able to observe eligible girls during the Championships. Basketball Fiji hopes to announce the National Youth Coaches next week.
