PNG Included In Easter Basketball Championships

In the upcoming Easter Basketball Championship, which will be held at the Vodafone Arena from the 25th till the 30th of March, the event will feature a men’s team from Papua New Guinea. The team representing Papua New Guinea is made up of the finest players who have been crowned the inaugural champions of PNG Men’s Basketball League Championships, Moni Plus Tamaraws, which just ended two weeks ago.

Moni Plus Tamaraws is not only here to compete but is part of PNG Basketball Federations preparation plans for the Pacific Games, as they are the hosts for the Pacific Games in 2015. The last international teams to participate in a similar event was in 2000, where Australia came down to participate in the Easter Tournament championsips as well.

Nick Daroa, is the newly appointed President of the Basketball Federation in Papua New Guinea. He and Mr John Vere, PNG Men's Basketball League President and member of the PMBL Working Commitee, have been part of the commitee helping in sending the excited team down to our shores.

Lawrence Lahari, National U19 men's coach, has been in constant communication with Laisiasa Puamau, the Fiji Basketball Development Officer, about the programs and involvement of the PNG team in the Championships. Both are excited to see what the neighbouring island teams has to bring.

"Its good to have Papua New Guinea included in the Easter Tournment because it will bring a new flavor to the courts, a new style", say's Mr. Puamau.

The Easter Tournment will feature 16 men's and 10 women's teams from the Raiwaqa, Raiwai, Suva, Lautoka and Nadi Basketball Associations. It will be a three day tournament that will showcase  skill, determination and hardwork by all players as indivduals and as a team.
