Basketball profile up

THE inclusion of Western teams has raised the profile of competition at the annual Easter Basketball tournament in progress at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala, Suva.

Four men's and two women's teams joined the competition from Lautoka yesterday and gave the Central teams a good run for their money in their opening pool matches.

Tribal, Namoli, West Saints and Titans are participating in the men's grade while Namoli and Tribal will feature in the women's category.

In the women's grade, Tribal from Lautoka defeated Mystics from Raiwaqa 25-15 but top favourites Sparks proved too good for Namoli thrashing the side 52-11.

In the men's grade, Raiwaqa's Veterans defeated Tribal 33-31 in a close competition while Namoli overcame Chances 20-19.

Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau was impressed with the much organised Western teams this year.

He said the new administration running the Lautoka Basketball Association had put in a good effort to help in the development of the sport in the West.

"They have come in well prepared this year and this shows the leadership qualities of the new executives running the association this year," Puamau said.

"Their (Lautoka teams) inclusion has definitely boosted the competition level as we look forward to more exciting games."
