Kids enjoy basketball clinic

Children from the Raiwaqa community and outside Raiwaqa have enjoyed the first week of a two-week-long holiday basketball clinic which was held at Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa. Basketball Fiji’s development officer, Laisiasa Puamau said this was the time when children can expose their talents and help increase player base of basketball players in the country.

The clinic started on Monday and Puamau said they were happy with the response.“We have more than 35 children in the Under-10 category, 45 in the U14 category and 55 participants in the U18,” he said. The kids are taught the basic fundamentals of basketball and this week’s clinic was a great build-up for the U18 competition which will be held today.
“The clinic for the Under-14s is a bit more advanced compared to the U10's. We are reinforcing the basics and introducing game scenarios like proper spacing on offence and help side defence. The clinics have been organised to up skill students who will be participating in the U18 Basketball Tournament hosted by the Raiwaqa Association and the upcoming Secondary Schools Competition.
Assisting Puamau with the clinic was national U19 women’s captain, Grace Taito. “The clinics are free and we are requesting parents to send their children to Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa if they want their kids to learn basketball, “We are using our experienced players to help out with the clinic to teach the younger players.”
