Fiji rugby schools join basketball

The 2013 Tucker’s Ice Cream secondary schools basketball competition begins this week and for the first time will include, schools normally associated with rugby.

Basketball Fiji administrator, Laisiasa Puamau says Ratu Sukuna Memorial, Nasinu Secondary and even Tailevu North are the latest inclusions to the eight-week competition which begins tomorrow.

“It came about just basically with our volunteers and development officers visiting the schools. We have two volunteers one at Tailevu North conducting clinics at the school and the other volunteer is at QVS. It’s quite an achievement for us and we are grateful for the schools accepting our invitation to conduct those development clinics.”

Forty-seven teams from 18 schools in the central division plus 10 western teams will be participating in the Central and Western Zone Basketball Leagues which begins tomorrow.

Saint Josephs Secondary, Adi Cakobau School and even Natabua have been tagged the competition favourites.

The national championship will take place in August.
