Victorians aim to get it right

Queen Victoria School played their first round of games in the Tuckers Central Secondary Schools weekly basketball competition at Ed’s Court yesterday. The Under-15 team lost to Suva Grammar 4-7, their U17 team also went down to Gospel High 14-16 and John Wesley College also defeated QVS 16-8 in the Under-19 grade.
The Victorians were eliminated in the U17 national semifinal last year while the U19 lost in the quarterfinal. This year the Tailevu school aims to improve to get better. Head coach Mereleni Tora said they have some new players in the team and most of her key players from last year have joined other schools.
“What we are trying to do now is to get the basics right and to give more time to our new players,” Tora said. “This is QVS second year of participation and we are hoping to improve our performance.
“The boys were too excited to play their first round of games today (yesterday) since they have had enough of preparation in school and were eager for game time,” Tora said.
Fiji Basketball Development officer Laisiasa Puamau confirmed the number of schools have increased in this year’s competition compared to last year. “We had 17 schools last year and this year it has gone up to 27. We are impressed with the number of interests shown from schools and we hope that will increase next year,” Puamau said.
“From next year we are hoping to set a new zone in Tailevu.”
