More teams to join

BASKETBALL Fiji will be setting up more zones to attract schools in next year's National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship. With 61 teams taking part in this year's Tuckers Ice Cream-sponsored tournament in Suva, the national body is hoping to spice up the competition with more teams.

One of its goals is to get North schools in the national event and Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said that goal was "now realistic". "That has been our long-term goal. It's something that we really would like to achieve," he said.

"Next year might be bit too short for us to achieve it but with the way the secondary schools program is going, we hope to be in the North next year conducting clinics and hopefully having some schools in second year participating in our program."

Puamau said the success gained by the schools in the West had motivated them to add more zones to their current program. He said the plan was to set up a Tailevu and Nasinu-Nausori zone to complement the two zones in the Central Division next year.

"The success in the West is a great sign and all thanks to Lautoka Basketball Association and the community of Namoli for helping in the development of the sport there. "Also a big thank you to the teachers who genuinely care about the development of the sport."
