Fiji U19 rep stars for her school

FIJI under-19 rep Tiana Kainamoli starred for the Saint Joseph's Secondary School basketball team to secure the girl's Tuckers Ice Cream National Schools Basketball U17 title.

Given the captain's armband, Kainamoli did not let her teammates down, scoring an impressive 28 points in the 37-14 defeat of Suva Grammar School during the final at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

SJSS had a strong lead 14-4 after the first quarter with Kainamoli contributing 12 points. Grammar made a strong comeback in the second quarter, closing the score at 19-14. SJSS coach Peniasi Kainamoli advised her players to stand tall in defence.

The instruction worked well for SJSS, thus frustrating Grammar's attacks. Kainamoli almost single-handedly led the SJSS comeback in the second half. She said it was teamwork that resulted in the win. "We are happy with the win. It's always tough to defend the title but I thank the girls for the performance," Kainamoli said.

She thanked coach and dad, Peniasi for helping the side.

Kainamoli dedicated the win to the SJSS U15 and U19 teams.

Meanwhile, Adi Cakobau School defended its U19 girl's title with a 21-19 victory over Yat Sen Secondary School.
