Basketball – Here to learn: Mont Dore

New Caledonian basketball club Mont Dore is in the country to gain as much experience as they can from local counterparts. Assistant coach Noha Tetuanui said the main aim of the one-week visit was to get acquainted with fellow Pacific island basketball players.
“This is an exchange which we have organised with Basketball Fiji to help build our girls team up as they’re part of the pre-selection squad for the FIBA Oceania Under-19 Championships being held here in November,”he said. “It’s also a chance to practice and improve our skills, expand our network by establishing a relationship with local basketball clubs and schools, and also a good cultural exchange for our students. “It is our first time coming to Fiji and we’ll start off just working with Basketball Fiji’s Laisiasa Puamau before we have games with local schools and clubs. This is a really good experience to help our students get more in touch with fellow Pacific islanders.
“This new generation has had an easier take on life and they’ve toured Australia in the past so we thought we’d bring them to Fiji for a new perspective of life and play basketball with other Pacific islanders. “We’re very thankful for the opportunity to be here and we look forward to inviting Fiji to come tour one day.”
Located in the capital Noumea, Mont Dore has brought a 21-member team of 11 boys and 10 girls with a 5-person managerial team, headed by head coach and New Caledonian women’s head coach for the 2015 Pacific Games Felix Kilikili.
The New Caledonians are scheduled to meet Suva schools Marist Brothers Highl, Yat Sen Secondary and Latter Day Saints College as well as top Raiwaqa clubs Saints, Mystics, Mighty Sharks, Dynamic Reds and Mighty Mights over the next week at Raiwaqa’s Ed’s Court.
Meanwhile, Basketball Fiji said in a press statement over the weekend that they fully supported the tour as it was a chance for our local players to expose themselves to international level basketball.
