B'ball meet improved

THE gradual improvement in the performance of the visiting schools in the Tuckers Ice Cream Secondary Schools Basketball Championship has amazed the organisers.

Championship co-ordinator Valerie Nainima was pleased with the skill level of the Western-based schools that are taking part in the four-day tournament. Newcomers Jasper Williams High School nearly caused a major upset against the under-19 girls defending champions Adi Cakobau School.

ACS managed to hold on for a slender 25-24 win at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Nainima said Natabua High School also proved a force to reckon with in both the boys and girls divisions.

"The teams are getting more comfortable playing at the Vodafone Arena specifically the teams from the West. "Their skill level is getting better and they are playing more aggressively."

In the boy's grade, Marist Brothers High School maintains its lead in the U15 and U17 grades while defending champions Latter Day Saints School is in command in the U19 grade but faces a tough competition from Marist and Jai Narayan College. Nainima said the competition was expected to get tougher as they reached the elimination stage from today.

"There were some close games and we expect more close games in the final rounds. The games are expected to get more aggressive and exciting."

Nainima said they were also running a Tobacco Free drive for student as part of Basketball Fiji's Hoops 4 Health program.

The championship will end tomorrow.
