Best Schools Basketball Event

THE Tuckers Ice Cream-sponsored Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship was hailed a success.

The four-day event which ended at the Vodafone Arena on Thursday saw new winners crowned in the under-19 grades.

John Wesley College, laced with players from the Mighty Mights basketball club scooped the U19 boys title.

The Raiwaqa boys upset defending champions, Later Day Saints 26-20 on their way to the final. In the girls division, Yat Sen Secondary School edged Saint Joseph's Secondary School 31-28 to walk away with U19 title.

Marist Brothers High School won the boys U17 and LDS defended its U15 title. SJSS reigned supreme for the second year in a row in the U17 grade while Suva Grammar School scooped the U15.

Last year, LDS dominated the competition, winning all boys grades. However, as earlier predicted by the Basketball Fiji officials, this year's competition was a thriller.

Newcomers Tilak High School stamped its mark in the U19 grade, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in its debut season.

Natabua High School reached the U19 final and proved too hot to handle.

Meanwhile, Basketball Fiji were also eyeing impressive performance in the U19 grade as they hope to select the best national side for the FIBA Oceania U19 Basketball Championship to be held in Suva next December.
