Fiji Finish 7th in FIBA Championships

Fiji finished seventh in the FIBA-USP Under-19 Oceania Basketball Championships at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

The BLK Fiji men's team won bronze medal in Division B after beating American Samoa 55-47 yesterday.

The BLK Fiji women's team also won bronze in the Division B after defeating Solomon Islands 87-44.

Basketball Fiji development officer Valerie Nainima commended the wins.

"We planned to finish in the top three, but winning bronze in Division B is a realisitic achievement for us," Nainima said.

"We knew we could have competed, especially in the women's again Guam. Despite that we have seen a lot of improvement in the girls during this past week," Nainima said.

"We need to realise that these players are only 13-15 years old and they are going to get better from this kind of exposure."

She said the weeklong tourney had taught the players well.

"These players know now how to be professionals in their mindset and it needs to come every day.

"You can't just show up on the court. Preparation is before, during and after, and you need to be disciplined in your everyday life," she said.
