FIBA 3x3 Workshop in Suva, Fiji

Manager and Catherine Grawich, the Hoops for Health Administrator from FIBA Oceania in Australia, to host the workshop for participating NBDO’S and H4H Administrators from around the Pacific region (Cook Island, Kiribati, Solomon Island, Vanuatu, Yep and Guam). As the workshop was held in Fiji, Basketball Fiji was also represented by two coaches from the H4H Program, two participants from Lautoka and a participant from Nadi with the addition of our own NBDO and H4H Coordinator.

3x3 is a shorter version of a normal 5 on 5 basketball game. This discipline has the ability to take players “from the streets to the world stage”. 3x3 focuses more on the physical and mental skill set of players as it is a fast paced game that requires players to continuously play for 10 minutes. During the workshop participants learnt how to organize an event on a digital platform, www.3x3planet.com, preparing for the event, running it and not forgetting the rules of a 3x3 game itself.

Morning sessions were theory work where the rules and guidelines were taught to the participants and then had practical sessions in the afternoons where they went out to various Primary and Secondary Schools to teach students how to play a game of 3x3 and the rules of the game. ‘3x3 is a fun and great way to learn basketball for new comers to the sport and we were shown this at Marist Brothers High School. It took us about 45 minutes to run some skill drills and explain how a 3x3 game is played with a group of boys, who had never touched a basketball in their life, for them to be playing as if they weren’t new to the game of basketball’ said Leah Seru a Hoops for Health Coach from the central division.

In addition, a coach’s workshop was organized on Tuesday evening from 6pm-8pm for interested coaches and school teacher. The schools that was represented at the coaching workshop was USP, Marist Brothers and International School. Represented at the workshop was the National Women’s Team and executives of Basketball Fiji and Committee members from the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association.

Fiji witnessed the excitement and opportunity that 3x3 produces as the workshop participants successfully organized and ran a FIBA endorsed 3x3 tournament on Saturday the 18th of April, the Pacific Jam, therefore giving Fiji a rank in the world of 3x3. There will be more 3x3 tournaments in the near future for BF and hopefully get a team to compete at the world stage one day.
