FIBA Oceania meets with BF Executive

It was agreed at the meeting that with the entry of the Fiji National team into the pre-Olympic qualification event in Spain, there is an unequalled opportunity to promote basketball to the wider Fijian community.

Some months back FIBA Oceania successfully negotiated a grant from the Australian High Commission in Suva to promote a 4 day "Women in Basketball" program, aimed at recruiting more junior girls to the basketball ranks, and getting former female players and coached to return to the game.  This program will be conducted next week in Suva, and with the high profile of the national Women's team, should be a terrific success.

The meeting also discussed the lack of competitions within the Suva region and the need to commence regular, weekly competitions.  There are many outdoor playing venues that could be used for games, and the federation executive undertook to meet with local school principals to discuss the use of some of their outdoor courts.  Providing competition on courts in close proximity to where people live has proven successful in other countries, and this will be a main objective of the federation in the immediate future.

The National Development Program was also discussed.  It is encouraging to see the number of players attending these programs, and with the introduction of competitions, the players will be able to put into practice what they are learning at training.

FIBA Oceania representatives will return to Fiji in a couple of months to conduct an Administration workshop for the executive and club representatives to help build the base of basketball in Fiji.
