Last year’s runner up Jose Rizal and dark horse San Sebastian gun for the solo lead as the two take on each other today in the 85th NCAA
basketball tournament as the league mourns the passing of former President Cory Aquino at The Arena in San Juan City. Drawing inspiration from memories they shared with their fall comrade, the Bombers rallied from 18 points down to turn back the Mapua Cardinals, 83-78, Wednesday while the Stags smashed the Angeles U Foundation Great Danes, 97-65, Monday to seize a share of the lead with a 6-0 (win-loss) slate apiece. After grieving the death of former captain Jayson Nocom last week, the Bombers will have another one to dedicate their victory to if they could hurdle the extremely dangerous, Ato Agustin-mentored Stags, whose long list of victims included reigning three-peat champion San Beda. “All our remaining games this season we’ll dedicate to Jayson Nocom,” said Jose Rizal coach Ariel Vanguardia. “This one is also for President Aquino, she’s our symbol of freedom and democracy.”
Meanwhile, the Cardinals and the Perpetual Help Altas, at near bottom with a 1-5 record each, try to breath new life to their sagging campaigns as the two collide at 2 p.m. that precedes the 4 p.m. Jose Rizal-San Sebastian showdown. John Wilson will be the player to watch for Jose Rizal after he sizzled with 25 points he laced with six booming triples while San Sebastian skipper Jimbo Aquino is expected to draw most of the attention from the other side after he erupted for 21 points in their recent win.
San Sebastian mentor Ato Agustin, a former PBA MVP, said they have to put extra emphasis in containing, if not stopping, Jose Rizal’s big
men and the talented Wilson.“We need to limit their big men, we also have to watch out for John Wilson because we know he can hit the big shots and make the big plays,” said Agustin. “Now if we can do these things, we’ll have a chance at beating them.”
