Buccs hand Wolves first loss of season (Week 5 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Geraldton Buccaneers continued their outstanding form to conclude Week 5 of the SBL handing the Joondalup Wolves their first defeat of the 2015 season while the Lightning and Flames split women's and men's victories.

There was just the one women's SBL match on Sunday to conclude the Week 5 action with the Rockingham Flames beating the Lakeside Lightning 95-56 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

There were then two men's matches to conclude the round with the Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Joondalup Wolves 133-115 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Rockingham Flames 107-100 at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

The women's battle on Sunday was a rematch from last year's grand final but the defending champion Flames proved far too good winning by 39 points in the finish over a vastly different Lightning team.

The result means that Rockingham remains unbeaten this season after five matches while Lakeside is yet to record a victory having lost all six attempts so far in 2015.

Last year's MVP Samantha Whitcomb was again outstanding for the Flames on Sunday afternoon finishing with 28 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 9-of-15 from the field, 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Her partner in crime Darcee Garbin was also outstanding returning to the Rockingham line-up and contributing 25 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Talisia Bourne added 11 points, six boards, five assists and two steals, and Shelby Meola 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Ashleigh Grant did all she could for the Lightning finishing with 26 points and 13 rebounds shooting 12-of-23 from the floor and 2-of-3 from three-point territory. Megan Craig added 13 points and three rebounds for Lakeside as well.

And then in men's action on Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers continued their remarkable run of form winning a seventh straight match and beating the Wolves by 18 points at Joondalup to hand the Wolfpack their first loss of the 2015 season.

The Buccs dominated the contest from the outset scoring at least 30 points in all four quarters and extending their margin at each break to eventually win by the 18 points.

Carter Cook was again terrific for the Buccaneers with 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals while shooting 10-of-13 from the field.

Bennie Lewis top-scored for Geraldton with 30 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists with Quincy Hankins-Cole adding 20 points and nine boards, Aaron Ralph 19 points and seven rebounds, Daniel Thomas 10 points and five assists, and Mat Wundenberg nine points, four boards and three assists.

Rob Huntington top-scored for the Wolves with 27 points to go with eight rebounds as they tasted defeat for the first time this year.

Damian Matacz also added 22 points and six boards for Joondalup, Trian Iliadis 19 points, Ben Ironmonger 17 (seven rebounds) and Sean Easther 13 (six boards).

The Lightning then ended their five-match losing streak beating the Flames by seven points at home on Sunday to give Rockingham a third straight defeat after it started the season winning four consecutive matches.

Jordan Swing again was the star of the afternoon for the Lightning finishing with 33 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Luke Thomas added 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for Lakeside with Jesse Dixon contributing 18 points, Corey Martin 14, Brad Jackson 10 and Jarrad Prue eight to go with 23 rebounds and two steals.

Cooper Land did all he could for the Flames ending the afternoon with 31 points and 10 rebounds with Taylor Land adding 18 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in a triple-double performance.

Ryan Godfrey also contributed 14 points and seven assists for Rockingham, Jarryd Griffin 12 points and nine rebounds, and Tom Remmerswaal eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
