Minecraft Comets win WNWBL

Queensland's MineCraft Comets won their first Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) title with a thrilling 40-38 victory over Victoria in Brisbane yesterday.

The Queensland team had a 24-13 lead at half time in the final, but a nervous third quarter saw the Victorians claw back to 28-all.

MineCraft Comets fans held their breath throughout the final quarter as their team rallied under pressure, with a Bridie Kean three-pointer giving them plenty to cheer about in the closing stages. The team led 39-36 with 20 seconds to go, and held on to win 40-38 and claim their first champions trophy in the League’s 14-year history.

Kean top-scored with 19 points and was voted MVP for the WNWBL Finals Series. Ella Sabljak (pictured below, centre, with captain Shelley Cronau and Bridie Kean) was honoured at the WNWBL awards on Saturday, being named in the 2014 WNWBL All Star 5 and awarded MVP in the low-pointer class.MineCraft_Comets_captain_and_award_winners

MineCraft Comets coach Dave Hegerty said the win was a tremendous relief for the team after many seasons spent at the bottom of the WNWBL ladder.

“It’s a testament to the whole squad’s efforts and their ability to work hard together to achieve this result,” Hegerty said.

“I’m extremely proud of them all for their hard work this year; from our starting 5 all the way through the squad to our bench players who may not have seen a lot of court time over the course of the season but they have been there week in, week out, training hard to make this result a reality.

“I’m very privileged to have been able to coach the MineCraft Comets and guide them to a championship this year.”

The MineCraft Comets' win caps off a successful year for wheelchair basketball in Queensland which included the state junior team, the Rolling Thunder, winning their national championships and the RSL Queensland Spinning Bullets winning silver in the recent National Wheelchair Basketball League finals.

The Stacks Goudkamp Bears won the WNWBL bronze medal with a 51-35 win over the Be Active Western Stars.
