Basketball ACT in conjunction with Wheelchair Sport NSW have received enough players registrations to form 4 teams and start a weekly wheelchair basketball competition on Monday evenings at the Belconnen Stadium.

Last Monday saw the first competition round played at the Belconnen courts.  Program Co-ordinator Jesamine Wheeler is delighted with the response from community members, with both disability and able bodied participants joining the wheelies program.

Game one saw the Breakers take on the Chargers who won the first game of the competition 18 to 15.

The Chargers took control early getting away to an early 4 point lead through good passing then leadership from Jack Taylor saw them go to half time with a 10 nil lead and things were looking bleak for the Breakers. It was the experience of Rachael Cody, who plays in the Women’s Wheelchair National League for the Sydeney Uni Flames, who took control in the 3rd quarter for the Breakers with the score at three quarter time being 16 – 8. With only 2 minutes remaining the Breakers had clawed back to being 3 points down. Skills and confidence from Ross Ballard and Jack Taylor led the Chargers to holding out the Breakers efforts to score winning by three.

Game two saw the Shooters take on the Spinners in a second close game for the night. Shooters hung on for a win 23 – 20.

It was the spinners who took first half honours leading 12 – 8 thanks to the shooting skills shown by Emily Norgate and Stephanie VanLeewan (who also plays in the Women’s National League for Sydney Uni Flames). In the third quarter the Shooters hit back with great support from Nathan Coulthard narrowing the lead to 3 points at three quarter time. In the final quarter the Shooters were able to display good teamwork lead by Harry Markcrow to come from behind and snatch a victory by 3 points.

The competition is set to run for 9 weeks with finals being played on Monday 23rd August. Each week players can participate in a skills session from 5.15pm to 5.45pm with games played at 5.50pm and 6.40pm. There are still vacancies for interested players with a disability or able bodied people to join the competition. Come along on Monday and join in the fun.
