15U & 17U MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 1 RECAP

15U MEN:

Saskatchewan 53 Manitoba 69

Manitoba’s 15U team opened the 2010 Men’s National Championship with an impressive 69-53 win over Saskatchewan.

With the score tied at 20 after one quarter, Manitoba took over outscoring Saskatchewan 17-6 in the second to go into half with a 37-26 lead.

Manitoba was led offensively by Junior Sesay with 21 points and 10 rebounds.   Saskatchewan’s leading scorer was Atlee Simon with 17 points, who also collected a game high 12 rebounds.  

Manitoba’s Junior Sesay was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.

Manitoba will look to improve upon their 1-0 record, as they take on New Brunswick Tuesday at 9:00 am.  Saskatchewan will look to get into the winning column with a game against Newfoundland Tuesday at 9:00 am.

Prince Edward Island 62 Newfoundland 117

Newfoundland’s 15U team opened their tournament with a lopsided 117 – 62 win over Prince Edward Island. 

Sam Prowse and Daniel Foo both had a game high 25 points for Newfoundland in a winning cause.  Randy Affleck and Mark Matheson led PEI with 13 points a piece.

Home Run Sports player of the game was Newfoundland’s Daniel Foo.  Newfoundland’s next game will be against Saskatchewan at 9:00 am on Tuesday.  PEI takes on Manitoba on Wednesday morning.

Alberta 56 Ontario 100

The 15U Ontario team had an impressive debut opening with a 100-66 win over Alberta.   Ontario outscored Alberta 32-7 in the first quarter and did not slow down from there.  Alberta did manage to outscore Ontario in the fourth but it was too little too late.

The leading scorer for Ontario, Tyrell Bellot-Green, was also the Home Run Sports player of the game.  He had 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting.  Emmett Cook and Adonis Monfort-Palomino lead Alberta with 11 points a piece.

Ontario returns to the court on Tuesday at 1:30 pm.  Alberta will look for their first victory of the tournament when they face Quebec on Wednesday, August 4th, at 1:30 pm.

Quebec 80 British Columbia 61

Quebec’s 15U team battled to a tough 80-61 win over team British Columbia.  Quebec had a 1 point lead at the half, but pulled away in the third outscoring BC 28-9 in the quarter. 

Patrick Steeves had a game high 21 points for Quebec, also collecting 9 rebounds in the victory.  Chase Ruttenberg and Jamie Madewan dropped in 13 points each for BC.  Quebec’s leading scorer Steeves was also named the Home Run Sports player of the game. 

Quebec will have a tough test in their second game when they battle Ontario Tuesday, August 3rd, at 1:30 pm.  BC will attempt to get into the winning column on Tuesday when they face Alberta.

 

17U MEN:

New Brunswick 98 Territories 32

The 17U New Brunswick team opened the tournament with a 100-32 victory over the Territories team.   

Adam Spurrell led New Brunswick scorers with 22 points.  Logan Boehmer led the Territories team with 13 points. 

The Nothers player of the game was New Brunswick’s Ryan Foster who had 17 points to go along with 6 rebounds.  The Territories continue against Quebec on Wednesday while New Brunswick will take on Quebec Tuesday at 3:45 pm.

Manitoba 62 Alberta 63

The Manitoba and Alberta 17U teams completed day 1 with a nail-biting 63-62 victory for team Alberta.  Manitoba clawed there way back from a 4th quarter deficit but could not complete the comeback.  Manitoba led by 2 at half but Alberta outscored Manitoba in the third and fourth quarters. 

The Nothers player of the game was Alberta’s Denzel James, who led all Alberta scorers with 17 points.  AJ Basi had 19 points for Manitoba in a losing cause.  Manitoba will hit the court again on Wednesday, August 4th, at 1:30 pm.  They will face the loser of the Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island game that is being played on Tuesday.  Alberta will face the winner of that game on Wednesday at 3:45.
