15U & 17U MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 3 RECAP

15U MEN:

Prince Edward Island 36 Manitoba 92

The Manitoba 15U team improved to 3-0 with a 92-36 victory over team Prince Edward Island.  Manitoba’s defence held PEI to only 13 points in the first half.

Manitoba was led offensively by Casey Blanca who had 18 points and 3 steals.  He was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  PEI’s leading scorer was Randy Affleck who had 18 points and 8 rebounds.    

Manitoba wraps up their round robin play against undefeated Newfoundland on Thursday at 11:15 am.  A Manitoba win would secure the first seed in pool B.  PEI plays their second game of the day tonight at 6:00 pm, when they face off against Saskatchewan. 

New Brunswick 62 Saskatchewan 64

In another close two point contest, Saskatchewan defeated New Brunswick 64-62 in day three action.  New Brunswick had an inbound opportunity at half-court with less than 3 seconds left in the game, but Saskatchewan did not allow a last second shot.  Saskatchewan’s Alexander Unruh had 33 points and 11 rebounds in the win, earning him the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Erik Nissen added 13 points for New Brunwick.    

Saskatchewan will complete their round robin when they face PEI later today at 6:00 pm.  New Brunwick also plays again tonight when they face Newfoundland at 6:00 pm.   

Alberta 60 Quebec 97

Quebec finished up their round robin schedule with a 97-60 pounding of team Alberta.  Quebec outscored Alberta 30-10 in the first and put the game into cruise control from there.  Quebec will wait for the results of the Ontario and BC game to see where they finish in pool play.  They are guaranteed at least a quarter final spot. 

Patrick Steeves had a game high 25 points, a game high 12 rebounds, and added 6 assists in the victory.  He was an obvious choice for the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Noah Daoust added 20 points for team Quebec.  Scott Lamb had a team leading 18 points for Alberta.

Quebec’s next game will be determined following the BC and Ontario game.  Alberta will play a quarter final game on Thursday at 6:00 pm.  Their opponent is yet to be determined. 

Newfoundland 80 New Brunswick 53

Newfoundland’s U15 team is now 3-0 after handing New Brunwick an 80-53 defeat. Newfoundland built a 17 point lead after one quarter and went on to a relatively easy victory.  New Brunswick is still looking for their first victory of the tournament.

Mitchell Hearn was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  Mitchell collected 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals for the winning side Newfoundland.  Newfoundland’s leading scorer was Ryan Harnett with 19 points.  Erik Nissen led New Brunswick with 9 points and 6 rebounds. 

Newfoundland will face off with undefeated Manitoba tomorrow at 11:15 with the winner being the top seed in pool B.  Both Manitoba and Newfoundland are assured quarter final births.  New Brunswick and PEI play at 11:15 on Thursday with both teams looking for their first victory.

Saskatchewan 67 Prince Edward Island 56

Saskatchewan won its second game of the day by defeating PEI 67-56.  Saskatchewan’s 20 point half time lead was dropped to 15 after 3 quarters but PEI could not get any closer than 11.  

Mitchell Hillis of Saskatchewan was the teams leading scorer with 12 points.  Mark Matheson had a whopping 29 points and 22 rebounds for PEI in the loss.  His extraordinary efforts led him to be named the Home Run Sports player of the game. 

Saskatchewan has finished their pool play in third place and will play in a round robin for placement starting Thursday at 8:15 pm.  There first opponent is not yet determined.  PEI will finish their pool play against New Brunswick Thursday at 11:15 am.

Ontario 101 British Columbia 60

Ontario’s 15U team completed their pool play with a 3-0 record thanks to a 101-60 victory over British Columbia.  Ontario led from beginning to end in pool A competition.     

Kemar Alleyne of Ontario was the Nothers player of the game.  He had 10 points in the Ontario victory.  Tyrell Bellot-Green had a team high 15 points for Ontario.  British Columbia’s Jamie Madewan had 17 points in the defeat.  

Ontario moves directly to the semi-finals on Friday at 6:00 pm with there opponent being determined during Thursday play.  BC will play a quarter final game on Thursday at 8:15 pm against either Manitoba or Newfoundland. 

17U MEN:

Saskatchewan 84 Newfoundland 62

Saskatchewan 17U’s won their first game of the tournament by defeating Newfoundland 84-62.  The win moves Saskatchewan into the quarter finals, while Newfoundland now finds themselves in the placement round robin.  Saskatchewan led after all four quarters on way to a 22 point victory.    

The Nothers player of the game was Saskatchewan’s Matthew Forbes.  Forbes collected 23 points and 10 rebounds for the double double.  Shane Stack had 21 points, while Aaron O’Brien had 19 rebounds for the losing side Newfoundland. 

Saskatchewan will have a quarter final game on Thursday at 1:30 pm.  Their opponent is yet to be determined.  Newfoundland will play a two game round robin for placement starting on Friday at 11:15 am.

Manitoba 87 Prince Edward Island 78

Manitoba made their way into the quarter finals with a hard fought 87-78 victory over a scrappy PEI team.  Manitoba was down seven after the first quarter but outscored PEI 22-13 in the second to take a two point lead into half.  Manitoba extended their lead to 7 after three and did not look back from there.   

The Nothers player of the game was Manitoba’s Joey Nitychoruk.  He had a tremendous offensive game dishing in 22 points and adding 15 rebounds.   Matthew Daley and Sean Seviour both had 19 points for Team PEI.  Jacob Simmons had 13 rebounds in the loss. 

Manitoba now enters into the medal round with a quarter final match on Thursday, August 5th at 6:00 pm.  Prince Edward Island will enter a two game round robin for placement beginning on Thursday at 1:30 pm.  Opponents for both teams have yet to be determined. 

Nova Scotia 65 Alberta 76

Team Alberta moves into the quarter finals winning their second tight contest of the tournament, 76-65 over team Nova Scotia.  Nova Scotia was trailing by 13 points at half but narrowed the lead to six by outscoring Alberta 16-9 in the third.  Alberta would not role over and solidified the win in the fourth. 

The Nothers player of the game was Alberta’s Brin Taylor who led all scorers with 21 points.   Nova Scotia’s Shaquille Smith scored 14 to lead Nova Scotia. 

Alberta will face Saskatchewan in quarter final action on Thursday at 1:30 pm.  Nova Scotia takes on British Columbia tomorrow at 3:45 in another quarter final match-up. 

Ontario 77 British Columbia 69

The Ontario 17U team improved to 2-0 and secured top spot in pool C with a hard fought 77-69 victory over BC.  Ontario carried a 13 point lead into half but BC came out strong in the third and narrowed the gap to six after three quarters of play.  Ontario held onto the lead in the fourth.

Grant Mullins was named the Nothers player of the game.  He led Ontario with 13 points to go along with 7 assists.  Marko Pirovic added 12 for team Ontario.  David Wagner had a game high 15 points for British Columbia. 

Ontario goes into the quarter finals with a two game win streak.  They will face-off against New Brunswick on August 5th at 3:45 pm.  BC finds themselves playing Nova Scotia in a Thursday afternoon quarter final game. 

Territories 49 Quebec 141

The Quebec 17U team wrapped up the first seed in the quarter finals by easily defeating the Territories 141-49.  The lead for Quebec was only 15 after the first quarter but they quickly increased that in the second quarter by pouring in 53 points in the frame. 

The Nothers player of the game was Quebec’s Olivier Hanlan who had 23 points for the winning side.  Frederic Dure had a game high 30 points for Quebec.  The Territories leading scorer was Logan Boehmer with 13 points and 5 rebounds.  

Quebec will now face Manitoba in quarter final action on Thursday at 6:00 pm.  The Territories will face PEI at 1:30 pm tomorrow.
