15U & 17U MEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 5 RECAP

15U MEN:

New Brunswick 47 Saskatchewan 60

Saskatchewan concluded their tournament with a 60-47 victory over New Brunswick.  The win gives Saskatchewan a 7th place finish.  New Brunswick will play Prince Edward Island tomorrow morning; the winner receives an 8th place showing at this years tournament. 

Ben Redl of Saskatchewan received the Home Run Sports player of the game award for his 7 points and 13 rebound performance.  Alexander Unruh, also from Saskatchewan, had a game high 18 points.  Erik Nissen had 11 points and 9 rebounds for New Brunswick. 

Quebec 94 British Columbia 64

Quebec advances to the 15U championship final with a relatively easy 94-64 victory over British Columbia.  Quebec was up by 12 after one quarter and continued the domination in each of the next three quarters.  BC will now play in the bronze medal game against the loser of the Manitoba and Ontario semi-final. 

Patrick Steeves had a game high 29 points for team Quebec.  James Tyrell of Quebec was named the Home Run Sports player of the game.  He had 11 points and 6 assists for the winning side.  Luka Petkovic led BC with 20 points.

Quebec will face the winner of the Manitoba and Ontario game in the championship final.  The game takes place on Saturday, August 7th, at 6:00 pm.  BC will play for bronze at 1:30 pm tomorrow.

Ontario 100 Manitoba 62

Ontario’s 15U team will take on Quebec for the gold medal at the 2010 17U and 15U National Basketball Championships.  Ontario defeated host Manitoba 100-62 in the semi-final.  Manitoba competed hard all game but Ontario proved too much for them to handle.  Manitoba will look to rebound in the bronze medal game against BC tomorrow.

Tyrell Bellot-Green was named the Nothers player of the game for Ontario.  Tyrell had 15 points and 16 rebounds.  Cassidy Ryan added 16 points for Ontario.  Joshua Magpantay of Manitoba had a team leading 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting. 

The gold medal game between Ontario and Quebec takes place on Saturday at 6:00 pm.  The bronze medal game between Manitoba and British Columbia occurs at 1:30 pm. 

17U MEN:

Newfoundland 76 Territories 54

Newfoundland and the Territories opened up play on Friday with Newfoundland coming out on top by a 76-54 score.  Newfoundland never trailed in the game on way to a 22 point victory.

Adam Keating of Newfoundland was named the Nothers player of the game.  Keating scored 10 points and added 4 rebounds for the winning side.  Logan Boehmer and Louis Nutarariaq both had 11 points for the Territories.

The loss concludes the tournament for the Territories.  Newfoundland will wrap up their tournament with a game against PEI at 8:15 pm tonight. 

Alberta 79 New Brunswick 78

Alberta won its second 1 point contest by defeating New Brunswick 79-78.  The win puts Alberta into the 5th place game while New Brunswick plays for 7th.  New Brunswick built a 11 point lead going into half but Alberta came out flying in the 3rd quarter outscoring New Brunswick 36-20 in the frame.  The teams battled back and forth in the fourth quarter and with seconds left in the game New Brunswick had their shot go off the rim, securing an Alberta victory. 

Alberta’s Tyson McIntyre was the Nothers player of the game.  He had 15 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side.  Adam Spurrell and Peter Esson of New Brunswick each put in 21 points.  Esson also had a team high 9 rebounds.  Alberta will face the winner of the Manitoba and Nova Scotia game on Saturday at 11:15 am.  Nova Scotia plays the loser of Manitoba and Nova Scotia on Saturday at 9:00 am.

Nova Scotia 81 Manitoba 60

Manitoba will now play for a seventh place showing thanks to an 81-60 defeat at the hands of Nova Scotia.  Nova Scotia outscored Manitoba 24-13 in the third quarter to open up a sizeable lead that Manitoba could not answer. 

Shaquille Smith led Nova Scotia scorers with 22 points and was named the Nothers player of the game.  AJ Basi had 22 and Michael Thorne-Finch had 20 for the losing side Manitoba.   

Nova Scotia now faces off against team Alberta, the winning team finishes 5th place at this years tournament.  Manitoba and New Brunswick will play Saturday at 9:00 am to conclude the tournament for both teams. 

Quebec 89 British Columbia 86

Quebec now enters the gold medal game at both the 15U and 17U categories with an 89-86 victory over BC.  British Columbia will play for bronze in both competitions.   Down 11 after three quarters, BC made it interesting in the fourth but Quebec held on down the stretch.     

The Nothers player of the game was Quebec’s Alexander Pinet-Watson.  He contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds.  Frederic Dure of Quebec had 24 points for Quebec.  BC’s Malcolm Williams had 18 for the losing side from BC.    

The 17U gold medal game between Quebec and the winner between Saskatchewan and Ontario will take place Saturday at 8:15 pm on centre court.   BC plays in the bronze medal game Saturday at 3:4 pm.

Prince Edward Island 86 Newfoundland 80

Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland ended their tournaments with an 86-80 victory for PEI.  Going into the half, Newfoundland held a one point lead but PEI outscored Newfoundland in the last two quarters to go out on a winning note. 

Matthew Daley had a huge game for PEI.  He had 33 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in the game.  That was more than enough for him to be named the Nothers player of the game.  Newfoundland was led by Kyle Manning’s 16 points. 

With the win PEI claims the 9th spot in the tournament while Newfoundland has to settle for 10th.

Ontario 89 Saskatchewan 53

The 17U final has been set thanks to an 89-53 win for team Ontario.  Ontario will play Quebec for the championship.  Ontario never trailed in the game.

The Nothers player of the game was Isaiah Watkins of Ontario thanks to his 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Joe De Ciman led Saskatchewan with 21 points. 

Ontario plays Quebec in the final on Saturday night at 8:15 pm.  Saskatchewan will try to capture the bronze when they play BC at 3:45 pm on Saturday.
