Power Horse sweep finals of Subaru Cup

DOHA: Power Horse Energy Drink swept the second win over Batang Isarog, 72-63, in the best-of-three championship series to capture the crown in the Division-1 of Subaru Cup 2012 of Pinoy Basketball Qatar (PIBAQ) at the jampacked Al Gharafa Training Gym.

It was a sweet victory for the new champions after several attempts in the past seasons even they had already built up a strong contending team raring for the top plum in the premiere Filipino basketball league in Qatar.

Batang Isarog rallied by maintaining its momentum in the first half only to be eaten alive by the hungrier Power Horse that broke away with a double-digit edge in the second half and never looked back until the final buzzer. The presence of Ghassan Al Raahi, Field Sales Manager of Power Horse Qatar, has also perked up their motivation to win the game.

It was however a different story in the best-of-three championship series in the Division-2 when KIA Motors eked out a rubber match against crown hopeful Dukhan Ballers, fuelled by a buzzer beating basket of Aries Jose to even the series, 1-1, via a one-point win, 82-81.

Referees and table officials awarded the basket after George Luna, head table official, said he saw Jose already released the ball in his inbound drive with still three seconds left in the game. Both teams will settle for the do-or-die rubber match next Friday.

The championship games which were attended by thousands of Filipino basketball aficionados was also a special event with the presence of well-known respected Filipino ABS-CBN TV news anchor Tina Monzon Palma, who is also program director of Bantay Bata 163.

Palma led the award giving event after the games and was assisted by Allan Paul Paredes, marketing administrative of Subaru cars in Qatar, Ronald Arugay, marketing manager of McDonald’s Qatar, Wyngard Aligaga, country manager of The Filipino Channel in Qatar and Delfin Montenegro, TV news correspondent of The Filipino Channel-Middle East.

Given citations by PIBAQ officials were Most Valuable Player in both divisions, the Best Coaches, Finals MVPs, Mythical Five selections and special awards on loyalty to the officials of the league.
