TWINKLING rather than SHINING !
On Day 1, we used our own field (providing a 300m. circuit) to complete all 3000m. races and a selection of Field Events. The SLHS "stars" were mostly to the fore, as expected, but the heat and the bumpy, dusty conditions did not enhance performances. A summary appears below, but look for Aribo, Banrenga, Teriina, Bitamatang, Tekaiwa, Takakia, Taom, and Buraieta among those expected to do well. Then we had new boys Isaiah and Aretita who will feature more. (Bitamatang placed 2nd. this time !) Please note that the age-groups used were not strict, Inter being Forms 4 and 5, Open being Forms 6 and 7. Also please note that each team entered four athletes per event, thus each event had 12 competitors, and each sprint race up to 400 was run as "A" and "B" races then ranked on times. In the Relays there was only one team per Team !

FEATURES FROM DAY 2.
The first feature was that the three teams, despite being based close by, all arrived more than one hour late ! This had a number of knock-on effects, all bad ! All had to be longer in the sun; the day dragged for the officials who had been early; the sun hit the front seats of the stadium building about the time we should have finished; everyone got very hungry and thirsty (we should have finished in time to go for lunch !) We will try to find the reasons for this, to avoid it happening again.
The officials did a good job, but we needed to keep the track programme moving - being ready for the NEXT race while the current race is running. We weren't !
In terms of performances, top of the list was Takakia equalling the National Record for MShot with 12.95m. Next was the treble of sprint PBs by Tearoba (inspired by his team) second in the OB 100m. (11.6), winning the OB 200m. (24.0), and winning the OB 400m. (52.9). New Inter boy Tioti (100 in 11.6, 200 in 24.9) was supported by Tonika (2nd. in 100 in 11.9, 2nd. in 200 in 25.0, winner of 400 in 57.7) and Taom (3rd, in 200 in 25.4, and 2nd. in 400 in 58.3).
Taom was a busy boy elsewhere, 2nd. in IBLJ on Day 1. (5.28m.) and winner of the IBDiscus (34.80m.). Then on Day 2, apart from his track exploits, he won the IBShot (13.24m.), and placed 2nd. in the IBTJ (11.02m.)
Others to shine were Taeateiti (Buraieta's brother) in the IB Jumps; Buraieta (OB Jumps); Tanro, Itinnaibo (Tim), and Andrewin the OB sprints: Mikaere (IB) and Bitamatang (OB) in the 800m.
AND OF COURSE THERE WERE GIRLS !
Teriina was the IG star, winning 100m. (15.0), 200m. (31.9), 2nd. in 400m.(1-20.7), winning LJ (3.80m.0 and HJ (1.27m.) on Day 1. and TJ (8.52m.) She was joined by Mira in the OG who took the 100m. (15.2), 200m. (31.5), and 3rd. in the 400 (1-18.4). Banrenga, having taken the OG 3000m. on Day 1, won the 400 (1-17.0), 800 (3-05.0), and 1500 (6-23.5).
There was nothing outstanding on the Field, just a lot of effort. In the throws the girls need to get stronger, faster, and develop more consistent technique.
FINALLY THE RELAYS.
It is usually possible to gauge strength in depth by looking at Relay times.
IG Relay. (4 x 100) 1. 1-05.3 2. 1-06.0 (4 x 400) 1. 5-41.2 2. 5-49.5
SG Relay. (4 x 100) 1. 1-02.2 2. 1-03.2 (4 x 400) 1. 5-34.8 2. 5-41.0
IB Relay. (4 x 100) 1. 48.8 2. 50.0 3. 50.1 (4 x 400) 1. 4-06.3 2. 4-14.7
OB Relay. (4 x 100) 1. 48.8 2. 49.2 3. 49.4 (4 x 400) 1. 3-57.8 2. 4-01.6 3. 4-04.7
We hope to produce one more successful Inter-School team from these athletes. But at the moment there has been no attempt to organise the Inter-School, the biggest meeting of the year !
