NEWCOMERS ACHIEVE !
To add to the PB in the Shot by Raobu Tarawa on Saturday (Day 1), the other two newcomers achieved PBs in their events on Day 2. First David Birati cleared 5.97m. with his opening jump in the MLJ and backed this up with 5.90m. on his third. Now carrying a slight foot injury, he passed the last two attempts and placed 6th. (behind the winning 7.63m. of Frederic Erin of New Caledonia !)
In the final track event of this meeting, the u-18 M400, new boy Kiakia Tekambwa ran fourth in 52.55, smashing his PB and breaking the Kiribati National Junior Record. With a slow start and leisurely finish, this performance nevertheless places him in an excellent position to break the NR (52.00) later this week !
Also doing a flat M400 in preparation for his M400H, Beteru Ateri clocked 57.65, not his best but a useful pipe-opener !
The third PB of the day came in the M200m. when Tearoba Takeruru ran sub-24, clocking 23.90 in 6th. Ahead of him in 5th. (23.17) was Rabangaki Nawai, destined to do the Octathlon in the Championships. The third sprinter, Tanroo Taniera, won the fourth and final Heat in 23.65. Thus they all performed better than in their 100m. on Saturday.
STEEP LEARNING CURVE !
In the gloom of evening, and throwing from a cage for the first time, Raobu Tarawa managed only one legal Discus throw (of 6 attempts). His throwing was OK and always within the sector, but he needs more control on the recovery after release. His only legal throw was worth 34.91m.
ASTHMA ATTACK !
Meanwhile, the excitement got to Ms. Kaitinano Mwemweata and she suffered an asthma attack sufficiently severe that she was taken to hospital. Following examination and spray and liquid treatment she was breathing easily and back to her normal vivacious self ! We hope she will be fully fit by Thursday for the Heptathlon !
DANCE DEMO !
Every group we take away is capable of staging a dance performance and this group is no exception. Under the guidance of Team Manager Ms. Kairao Tune, they have been practicing in the largest of our rooms. We hope that they will stimulate interest in Kiribati during the Closing Ceremony on Saturday evening. For sure they will entertain !
