Etten Island Claims HOOPS 20/U Basketball Title

Sunday, August 21st was the showdown between the best two 20/Under basketball teams. After almost two months of games, it was now down to Etten and Mwan, Weno to see who would claim the title.

A crowd gathered and continued to grow until game time found many spectators waiting for the opening jump ball. They were not disappointed, as the Etten team started strong: rebound, fast break, pass, cross court pass, shoot, money.

The Mwan team, after falling behind in the early minutes, courageously fought back getting solid minutes and points from their two big men inside. With continued effort the got the score below 10 points and kept it there until half time.

The second half saw no let up by either team. Etten tightened their defense, double teaming and trapping the ball handler to get several steals, followed by an outlet pass and quick scores. Although Mwan put up a valiant effort, the superior teamwork and cross court passing, and finding the open man, allowed Etten to build a large lead.

Both teams played hard right up until the final buzzer. Etten claimed first place and Mwan second. The players met at center court and shook hands. Afterwards certificates were awarded and the players were thanked for following HOOPS's rules forbidding the use of tobacco and other substances.

Photos were taken, smiles and laughter filled the court and spilled over onto the grass. The players had played their best, the spectators had been well entertained, and there were smiles and pleasant conversation all around.

Congratulations to the players, coaches and sponsors of Etten and Mwan and to the other 12 teams for a great summer of youth basketball.
