Schools b'ball reaches finals
ALL the top bets at the Twisties Secondary Schools National Basketball Championships had comfortable wins yesterday are on track for the finals.
In the Under-19 boy's grade, defending champions, Marist brothers High School thumped Laucala Bay Secondary School 30-17.
The boys from Flagstaff will face stiff competition from the likes of Natabua High School, International Secondary School and Yat Sen Secondary.
In its first match at the tournament, Natabua beat Suva Grammar School 24-14 to send out a warning to the Suva schools.
However, it suffered a setback when the side was beaten 43-35 by Gospel High School. Yat Sen handed SGS its second successive loss, winning 66-22.
In the girls U19, Yat Sen and SGS looked sharp. Yat Sen beat Saint Joseph's Secondary School, 34-11.
SGS thumped Ba Provincial High School 46-19 before accounting for Natabua 28-24. Latter Day Saints thrashed Laucala Bay, 64-13.
In the U17 grade, MBHS was beaten by Natabua 23-19, while Laucala Bay beat debutants, Monfort Boys High School, 22-18.
Games coordinator Laisiasa Puamau said while the tradition giants were on track, the minnows showed great enthusiasm and skill level.
"There are a number of players who we have in sight for the Under-20 side for the Oceania Championships to be held in New Caledonia next year," Puamau said.
Girls: U15 LBSS 18 Natabua 14, Yat Sen 19 LDS 16, ISS 20 LBSS 12, Natabua 22 SGS 10.
U17 SGS 35 YSS 21, Indian Colege 32 LBSS 26.
Boys: U15 MBHS 31 LBSS 1, ISS 19 Gospel 6.
U17 Edupia 60 MBHS B 23, LDS 59 YSS 24, Natabua 27 Gospel 24
