Gospel School of the Deaf takes out Digicel Special Schools Competition

The 2009 Digicel sponsored National U16 Special Schools Basketball Competition ended with the Gospel School of the Deaf taking out the boys and girls title. The one day competition which was held on the 26th October at the Old gym in Suva saw four specials schools and three mainstream schools register for the event. The six registered schools were Gospel School of the Deaf, Hilton Special School, Suva Special School, Labasa School for Special Education and the mainstream schools were Vatuwaqa Primary School, John Wesley School and Marcelline School in Vatuwaqa. However two registered schools failed to show up and they were Labasa School for Special Education and Marcelline School. In the boys division five teams of a single pool played a round robin with the top two finishes squaring up for a final show down. In an anticpated finish Gospel School of the Deaf defeated a young John Wesley School 29 - 2 to be crowned the winners in the boys division. In the girls final Gospel School of the Deaf defeated a well trained Hilton Special School 38 - 22 to also take out the girls division. The tournament came to a close with a closing ceremony with each participant and volunteers enjoying the organised basketball competition.
