Basketball gold bid begins

THE national basketball team will start its campaign to defend the Pacific Games women's basketball gold medal with an open trial this weekend. Basketball head coach Michael Whippy said the quest to defend and retain gold won in Samoa in 2007 begins this Saturday. Whippy said they want ed to win gold again at next year's Games in New Caledonia.The campaign will start with a training program during the National Open trial at Lambert Hall on Saturday morning. "All women basketballers in the country are invited to attend," Whippy said. "An Intensive Training Program has been planned, from Saturday up to the team's final selection at the end of July. "The current Women's Under-20 basketball team preparing for the Oceania Championships in Noumea this October will also be attending the trials." Whippy said all triallists were to come in black shorts, with a white and a coloured vest, a tracksuit top, a pen and to bring their own water.The trials will be conducted at Marist Brothers High School's Lambert Hall from 10am to 1pm and athletes are required to be there at 10am sharp, for the start of registration," Whippy said.
