Defensive plans work out well for Raiwaqa basketball

THE Raiwaqa Basketball Association started a knockout tournament last weekend which featured the two defensive strategies.

In this tournament, teams were required to play the zone defence in the first and third quarter and man-to-man in the second and final quarter.

Association president Saula Koroi said they implemented the new rule to allow for the development of sport.

The association first introduced the man-to-man defence in the age group competition earlier this year and noticed the improvement in the game.

Koroi said the senior teams did not have problems adapting to the pattern because their players were well equipped with the strategy.

"The standard has really improved since we introduced the man-to-man defensive strategy in the age group competition," he said.

"The response we have been receiving from the senior teams is awesome. They know what this strategy is about and are not finding hard to adapt to the game."

The knockout, which features top clubs from Raiwaqa, will be played over three weekends at Eds Court. Lady Bird and Sparks have emerged as the top contenders in the women's competition while in the men's grade Warriors, Idaman and Boston are the top bets.

Koroi said they anticipated a tougher competition in the upcoming rounds.
