Basketballers receive boost, encouragement

THE Basketball Fiji under-19 boy's and girl's teams are all set to fly the national flag at the FIBA Oceania Youth Basketball Championship in Melbourne, Australia.

The week-long event, which starts this Saturday, will see Fiji competing against seven other Oceania nations including Australia and New Zealand.

The team received its blessing from the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau yesterday during the i-tatau presentation at Government House where he challenged the players to do the nation proud. Following that, the national side received a major boost to their campaign from the Uprising Beach Resort.

The Pacific Harbour-based resort sponsored the team's training, travelling and playing attire through its Uprising Rugby Fiji (URF) brand

Resort operations manager James Pridgeon said they were proud to be associated with Basketball Fiji.

He said they were branching out to smaller sports through their renowned URF brand to help in the development of sports in the country.

"Our focus is grassroots level development and that's one of the reasons why we are sponsoring Basketball Fiji," Pridgeon said.

"We wish the team the very best and we hope the players maintain the momentum in the tournament."

National U19 girls team skipper Grace Taito thanked the Uprising Beach Resort for its generous contribution.

She said the sponsorship had boosted team morale and hoped it would result in a better performance at the championship, which ends early next month.

The national team flies out tomorrow.
