The national Under-19 women’s basketball team has qualified for the Oceania Youth Championship semifinal today.
This was after they upset New Caledonia 41-33 at Churchill Leisure Centre, Melbourne Australia yesterday.
It was a good start for the Grace Taito- captained side after they led 13-8 at halftime. Maraia Naulivou was Fiji’s top scorer with 13 points.
The side beat Papua New Guinea 46-30 in their pool game on Wednesday.
Fiji led 18-10 at halftime and Naulivou was again the top scorer with 16 points.
Meanwhile, the Fiji men’s team lost 47-66 in their final pool game against New Zealand.
The two battled it out on the court in an intense and fast paced match.
In the second quarter Mataika Koyamainaivure scored from eight rebounds and sunk seven more to be the highest scoring player. New Zealand led Fiji 25-19 at halftime.
The team was scheduled to play Samoa in the quarterfinal last night.
