Learning experience

Fordham University from United States of America yesterday played a match with the Fiji women’s basketball team at the multipurpose courts in Lautoka yesterday.
Fordham Uni played warm-up matches with teams from New Zealand and Australia before heading down to Fiji.
Coach Stephanie Gaitley said she has been in touch with Basketball Fiji for the past years but this was a very good opportunity play in Fiji. “Fijian players will get to experience skills and learn from outside teams. I have worked with the Fiji women’s team six years ago. “We are looking to strengthen our relationship with Basketball Fiji in the near future,’’ said Gaitley.
The Fijians went down to Fordham University 39-51. It was a very competitive match between both teams as players had been up to their fitness level, says Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau. “We are happy with the scoreline as this was the first time these players played against a team from the US. “Our main focus is on the FIBA Oceania Championships in October which will be hosted in New Zealand and this match surely gave us a fair idea of what we might face. “Fijian players are equally good. Valerie Nainima will soon be flying off to Israel under a professional contract to play for a club,’’ said Puamau.
Puamau say Fijian players given the right exposure could be seen playing in overseas clubs.
