Hoops for Health Coaches Workshop

The Hoops for Health Coaches workshop was from the 2nd to the 5th of March 2016. We have seventeen(17) development coaches from around Port Vila that attended the workshop which was officially opened by His Excellency, the Deputy High Commissioner of Australia in Vanuatu Mr. Simon Flores.

Day 1 focused on Fundamentals of a good coach, Being a good communicator and safety first. The participants also provide their expectations of the workshop. For Day 2 we had two interesting presentations from the Ministry of Health, on NCD's and a Media & Communications presentation from the Vanuatu National Youth Council's Media Officer. The participants then continue with Module 3 which is, Fundamentals of Basketball that they went up to the Stade Outdoor Basktball court for a session with the NBDO on court line markings and the structure of a basketball team. We then continue with the Hoops for Health Games resource. The Games resource has alot of fun games that intergrates health and basketball and how the coach can get school aged children to play the games while learning about their Health and Basketball. The coaches also learn how to develop a session plan for a school activity.

On day 3 the participants presented their session plans and then in the afternoon they have the chance to deliver their session plan with the year 6 students of Freshwota School. It is the first time for some of our coaches to work with primary aged children but the school kids enjoyed the time with the coaches and they also learned something new after their session with the coaches.

The coaches then received their certificates on Day 4 presented to them by the VBF President, Mr. Franck Franconieri and they each received a unifom as well to use when going out to the schools.

The participants said they learned alot during the 4 days of the workshop and we look forward in going out to the schools soon to help make a diffrence and also help reduce NCD risks.
