Raiwai celebrates youth day

The Raiwai Basketball Association held their first ever Vanua Championship to mark National Youth Day yesterday.

RBA development officer Kelevi Serukalou said the event would be played on an annual basis.

He said the current progress made by the association inspired them to organize this tournament.

Teams were divided in three confederacies of Tovata, Burebasaga and Kubuna and grades played ranged from the Under 10 to Open men.

“The idea for came about through the progress of the youth championships. Basketball was dead a few years ago here and we are rebuilding it now,” he said.

Serukalou said they were pleased with the outing yesterday.

“The Vanua Championships was a success for us judging by the number of grades that participated. We have kids from Raiwai, Raiwaqa, Samabula, Kinoya and every week the number grows,” he said.

He said they were thankful for the support from Basketball Fiji.

“Our ultimate goal is to up skill these young players and that would help our national team. We came under their umbrella and they supported us,” Serukalou said.

Meanwhile, in the Friday night round of matches Shaq edged Freshmen 63-61.
