Suva Secondary Schools Basketball Competition

The Suva Secondary Schools Basketball Competition began on the 11th June and will end on the 14th August. The preliminary competitions are build up games towards the National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships that will commence on the 24th - 28th August.

Basketball Fiji has stepped in to co-ordinate the competition due to the National Secondary Schools Association dissolving last year. The parent body has had four meetings with teachers and coaches in the bid to form a secondary schools committee.

Games are played every Thursdays and Fridays of the week and after school hours from 3.30pm to 5.15pm at six separate venues: Ed’s court, International gym, Indian College, Suva Grammar Basketball Court, Latter Day Saints Technical College and Yat Sen Secondary.

There are a total of nine confirmed secondary schools that will feature in the under 15, 17 & 19 for both boys and girls grade and they are:

  1. 1)      Suva Grammar School
  2. 2)      Marist Brothers’ High School
  3. 3)      Yat Sen Secondary School
  4. 4)      Latter Day Saints Technical College
  5. 5)      International Secondary School
  6. 6)      Saint Joseph Secondary School
  7. 7)      Gospel High School
  8. 8)      Laucala Bay Secondary School
  9. 9)      Indian College

In total there are 38 teams and 456 players that will feature in the Suva Secondary Schools Basketball Competition.

The team that has everyone watching their moves is Yatsen. Anchored by the ‘Big Three’ Sefton Hull, Joshua Motufaga and Ratu Filimone Tuivanualevu. This is the team to beat as described by many coaches and players alike. The Yatsen team was runner-up in last year’s competition and a large chunk of that team is playing again this year. Other teams aiming for a good run are International, LDS and MBHS the defending champs.
