Kaji basketball on the rebound

After a lapse of 20 years the first ever Post Fiji Kaji Primary School's Basketball competition
was held at the International Primary School outdoor court over the weekend.

And national basketball development officer Laisiasa Puamau was impressed with the performance of the youngsters. Puamau said the primary school students displayed an exciting and entertaining basketball game which raised eyebrows of the spectators that were present to witness
the upcoming national reps.

He said the kids showed determination to learn and understand more about the sport and he hoped with the current development programme Basketball is heading into a path of reviving the sport again.

There had been no kaji competition for the past 20 years and I am happy Basketball Fiji have started with
the development programme to revive the sport again, he said.

Basketball Fiji is very pleased with the performance of these young primary school students last Friday. They displayed good understanding and knowledge of the game during the competition, Puamau said.

œMost of the young kids also participated during the Raiwai Youth development programme every
week and had improved a lot with their performance.

They showed fast learning and looking at their performance, I know that basketball is heading into a right direction concerning the development of the sport, he said.

Puamau said they would later invite primary schools from Australia and New Zealand to help
left the level of competition in the country from the primary school
level.

Basketball Fiji is first looking at recruiting another five schools next year and reaching out to the outer divisions and as the program grows will organize games against primary schools from New Zealand and Australia.

Meanwhile John Wesley Primary School and Veiuto Primary School are the teams to beat in the competition.
John Wesley and Veiuto dominated the U10, 12 and U14 respectively and I believe the competition would be more competitive within the next few weeks, Puamau said.

He is expecting another five schools to join the competition from next season.
