Basketball Fiji Recieves Australian Sports Outreach Program Grant

Basketball Fiji's application for the Junior Basketball Development Program under the Australian Sports Outreach Program was successful. Basketball Fiji has been blessed with $8,510.00 FJ Dollars courtesy to the Australian Governament. The Australian Sports Outreach Program has been operating since 2006 and is managed by the Australian Sports Commission. Its goal is to increase capacity to deliever inclusive sports based programs that contribute to social development.

The funding will be used to achieve the followin objectives: -

1. To increase the number of participants playing basketball at the primary school level

2. To increase the number of local coaches and volunteers

3. Train local people to become coaches to ensure sustainability of the project

4. To provide an alternative choice to traditional sports

Basketball Fiji is a federation committed to the growth and development of basketball in the country. Basketball Fiji theme "Its more than just basketball" is testomny to our partners UNAIDS, Misnistry of Health, Fiji Para-Olympic Committee and Save the Children. Basketball Fiji plans to conduct a FIBA Level 1 Junior Coaching Course in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka before the year ends. The associations in these three area's are committed towards Basketball Fiji's development plans in the country. After the identification and training process of the development officers in these areas we will implement Junior Development Programs in primary schools in the Suva, Nadi and Lautoka areas. Furthermore after building from this years Inagurial Primary Schools Basketball Competition we hope to implement the Junior Development Programs in four communities around Fiji.

Basketball Fiji would like to acknowledge the Australian Governament for recognising a growing federation like Basketball Fiji and seeing the value of having providing an alternative choice for kids to traiditionally played sports not only in Fiji but throughout the pacific.
