Lautoka begins season with a Knockout

The Lautoka Basketball Association opened their season with a knockout competition on the 24th October, 2009 at the Lautoka Multi- Purpose courts. The games began at 9 am with 6 teams registered in the knockout and four more teams expected to join the weekly rounds of competition. The Lautoka Vikings teams who were the 2008 Men's club champions and runners up in the 2009 Post Shop National Easter Club Championships proved their dominance by winning the 2009 Lautoka Men's Knockout title over a newly formed team that goes by the name Yung Stars. Yung Stars which mainly are made up of secondary school students have raw talent and energy however they could not match the experience and firepower of the Vikings losing 71 -39. Especially when the Vikings have season campaigners Simi Cagilaba, 2008 National Men's gold medallist Charlie Vunisa and 2008 National U20 rep Peter Chambers to name a few. In the women's division Vikings seniors which are made up off middle aged women used their experience to their advantage to defeat their junior club team 33-25. A prize giving ceremony was conducted straight after the women's final to close off a fitting evening. Two team shields donated by Basketball Fiji and cash prizes provided by the Lautoka Association was presented to the winning teams and tournament MVP in the men's and women's grades.
