Westpac wins basketball final

Westpac was crowned winner of the business-house basketball competition after they defeated ANZ 48-26 in the final at the Vodafone Arena yesterday. Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau said the results were expected as Westpac was the form team heading into the final. Led by Frank Saketa and supported well by former national women's captain Olive Whippy, Westpac had only recorded a loss during the round robin matches. The defeat came at the hands of tournament favorites Pacific Building Solutions. “PBS had to withdrew from the competition during the semi-final rounds due to a lot of players travelling overseas for the Christmas holiday and others having work commitments.” “The advantage that Westpac has over the rest of the teams is that all there players are experienced basketball players and has a sound knowledge of the game. While for the rest of the teams, many are playing the game of basketball for the first time

In the third and fourth playoffs, Vodafone defeated RFMF 42-40. Meanwhile, Puamau praised all participating teams for a successful tournament. “The 2009 Suva Business-house competition has been organised to give an opportunity to employees from various corporate to participate in organised competition. The tournament has been very exciting to witness and the competition level has been higher then one expected.” Basketball Fiji, Puamau said, looks forward to organising a much bigger and better competition on 4 April when the 2010 business house competition is set to kick off.
