Visitors around the Fiji National Sports Council facilities were rocked on Friday morning when the Fiji Police Band led basketball teams participating in their annual Easter Championship to the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay.
Fiji Basketball’s Development Officer Laisiasa Puamau said that the presence of the Fiji Police Band, lifted the spirit of the players and created the necessary impact that basketball can and will only grow in Fiji. “We are so lucky to have the Fiji Police Band leading our march into the Vodafone Arena before the start of today’s proceedings. “This year, Fiji Basketball under the leadership of our President Commissioner of Prisons Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua we want to move to the next level. “By the end of the year, we want to expand our player base to 2500 and we also are playing basketball from January to December. “We want to increase on numbers at the age group level, because this is where we get own base for future national teams in the respective age groups. “We also are targeting the business houses to increase our numbers as well. Puamau said that Fiji Basketball was thankful to their partners and friends especially Post Shop, the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service. Visiting FIBA Oceania Development Manager Ms Regan Kama who is in Fiji to gauge what Fiji Basketball has done in recent years said that the work with the younger players was impressive. “What we have noticed in the past years is that there has been work done at the grassroots level and with young people. “This only makes the sport stronger.”
