$10K for basketball

Basketball Fiji (BF) received a boost prior to the Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship next week.
The competition involves 54 teams taking part in three grades of Under-15, U17 and U19, BF received $10,000 from Goodman Fielder as part of their sponsorship.
Goodman Fielder general manager Shaun Joils said they were proud to be associated with the sport.
“We know that it is not a profit-generating exercise,” Joils said.
“The competition is something that will get our kids off the streets and getting them involved into activities such as this.”
“Having 54 schools from 47 that participated last year is fantastic and we’re proud to be associated with Basketball Fiji.”
BF president Commissioner of Police  Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua thanked Joils for their support.
“This is the difficult bit when there are no funds to organise tournaments and we have a lot of expectations from the parents and through this sponsorship Basketball Fiji is able to organise a safe, secure and enjoyable tournament for the students away from school,” he said.
“Our profit is not measured in terms of money but by the amount of kids that we’re able to safeguard in the next few days next week.”
He told Joils that they had many foes but the sponsorship was an investment that made sure BF was able to get future citizens to be good citizens of Fiji.
“It’s more than just basketball, and I assure you that we will make good use of the funds to make the competition a successful one.
The championship begins on Monday next week at the Vodafone Arena.
